In response to the earthquake in Haiti there are organizations and
offices that are offering resources for the relief effort and to serve
those affected in Haiti and within the surrounding community. Please
keep all those in Haiti, their family members here in the states and
in other
places throughout the world in your prayers.
If you are seeking Information about family in Haiti, the U.S. State
Department has a number to call: 1-888-407-4747 or or 202-647-5225.
Heavy volume of calls may trigger a recording about communication
difficulties - KEEP TRYING!
One of our senior nursing students, Monette R., just left for Haiti
through her neighborhood humanities organization. She is requesting
that we share the info below with those who might be able to give some
time. The organization is sending relief groups to Haiti for a week at
a time and the next group will be leaving either the end of January or
beginning of February. Please share this with anyone you think might
want to join them (Free Transportation-See Email Below for details.)

Nursing finds its origins in the very earliest
of times when referring
to
a nursing mother, as in the
"wet nurse." It comes from the Latin
word,
"nutrire" which means "to
nurture." The English word, "nurse," used
first in
the 13th century, went through many
changes before it became the
word
we recognize today. Earlier
spellings of the word were "norrice,"
"nurice"
and "nuourice." Before
the 20th century, when the term "nurse" was
used in
non-English writings to refer to
providers of health care,
especially during
wartime, those caretakers were
typically men.
The Faculty of
LaGuardia Community
College Nursing Program encourage both men and
women to seriously
consider choosing nursing as their
career
of
choice. For
