Professor Alexander holds an M.A. in Creative Writing from Boston University and a Ph.D. in American Literature from The University at Buffalo with major study in the nineteenth-century roots of modern and postmodern literature, theory/continental philosophy, and science and literature. His current scholarly interests involve Conceptual Poetry, media studies, and social systems theory, but he also writes on the pedagogy of the difficult text. In addition to Basic Writing and Composition, he teaches ENG270: Introduction to Poetry, ENN198: Creative Writing, ENG260: The Novel, ENG271: Poetry Writing, and Liberal Arts 200. He is faculty co-mentor of the student Creative Writing Club.

Nancy Berke received her Ph.D. in English from the CUNY Graduate Center. She teaches composition and literature as well as the liberal arts capstone, “Humanism, Science and Technology.” She has also taught at Hunter College, and at universities in Croatia and Belgium as a Fulbright Scholar. Her areas of interest are modern American poetry, women’s studies, politics and literature, and essay writing. Her articles have appeared in such publications as American Studies, Legacy, and The Times Higher Education Supplement. She contributed a chapter to the anthology Gender in Modernism (U of Illinois P, 2007) and is the author of Women Poets on the Left (UP of Florida, 2001).

 

Since 1974 Professor Boris has taught in the English Department at LaGuardia Community College , where she received the title of Professor of English in September 1996. In addition, she is the founding director of WordsWorth Associates, Inc., which provides writing skills programs for attorneys and other business professionals in the United States and in Europe . She has published one book and numerous articles in 3 areas: on Shakespeare, on the teaching of writing, and on legal writing.

Jeremey Cagle is an Assistant Professor of English who earned his M.A. in Literature at Texas State University and his Ph.D. in English at the University of South Carolina. He teaches a range of writing and literature courses here at LaGuardia Community College.

Dr. Cagle’s research focuses on American literature of the 20th and 21st centuries. His criticism and scholarly work addresses historical and cultural contexts, narrative forms, and the relation of rhetoric to meaning in them. He has presented papers on American literature and culture at various regional and national conferences including Modernist Studies Association, South Central Modern Language Association, American Literature Association, and Popular Culture Association. He is currently working on a manuscript that reconsiders the legacy of game theory in postmodern American fiction.

Dr. Cagle also writes a blog, Clap for Bacon, about visiting New York City’s many landmarks and special places.

 

In the fall of 2008, Michael Carosone joined the faculty of the Department of English as an adjunct lecturer.
Currently, with his partner, Michael is writing and editing a collection of personal essays on the lives of Gay Italian American men. Recently, Michael was awarded the Poetry Prize for his poems, which were published in Gay City: Volume 2. He has been publishing his poems and essays in various books and journals. Michael completed his first book of poetry, and is working on the outline for his memoir.
In October of 2000, at the age of 25, Michael Carosone was given the National Italian American Foundation's Youth Award for Entertainment, for organizing the Brooklyn Film Festivals and the Italian American Filmmakers' Showcases. Since then, he has been passionate about learning more about his Italian American history, heritage, and culture. Michael has written a book on the marginalization of Italian American writers and Italian American literature. He wishes to continue to write on marginalized peoples and literatures, especially Italian Americans and people of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (GLBTQ) community. At various conferences nationwide, he has presented papers on queer Italian Americans.

Michael earned a B.A. and an M.A. in English from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York; an M.S. in Education Administration and Supervision from Touro College; and an M.S. in Library and Information Science from the Palmer School of Library and Information Science of Long Island University. In the spring of 2011, Michael will begin to earn his fourth master's degree, an M.F.A. in Creative Writing.
 

Linda Chandler joined the English Department at LaGuardia in the fall of 2005. She is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of California at Berkeley and she is currently working on her dissertation "Keeping Home: Another Look at Domesticity in Antebellum America." She has presented papers at various conferences such as the American Literature Association's Annual Convention, the Society for the Study of American Women Writers Annual Conference, and the Northeast Regional Conference on Christianity and Literature, to name a few. She currently teaches ENA 099, ENG 101, and ENG102, and she looks forward to teaching a literature elective in the future. During her free time she is either reading books or losing at Monopoly to her children.

J. Elizabeth Clark, Professor of English, teaches basic writing, composition I, introduction to poetry, creative writing, and the capstone course in the Liberal Arts (LIB 200) at LaGuardia Community College. Her scholarly interests include 20th century American poetry, the poetry of HIV/AIDS, children’s literature, teaching with technology, ePortfolio and digital rhetoric. She is a graduate of Lycoming College (B.A.) and Binghamton University (M.A. and Ph.D.).

She has been part of LaGuardia’s dynamic ePortfolio team since 2002 serving on the original research team, participating in the pilot, and serving as the Interim ePortfolio Director in 2006. She is currently active on the college’s assessment committee, the college’s technology committee, and in the English Department’s writing program, serving as its co-director from 2004-2010. She works closely with the Center for Teaching and Learning at LaGuardia, leading year-long professional development seminars, most recently on effective capstone courses.

A passionate advocate for teaching with technology, her article “The Digital Imperative: Making the Case for a 21st Century Pedagogy” in Computers & Composition outlines her position on the critical moment of reforming writing curriculum to include technology.

Her critical and creative work has appeared in journals such as: Peer Review, Women’s Studies Quarterly, The Minnesota Review, The Comstock Review, The Journal of Basic Writing, and A&U: America's AIDS Magazine. Nationally, she is the co-chair of the Council on Basic Writing and is on the editorial boards of College Composition and Communication and Basic Writing eJournal (BWe); she also serves as a reviewer for the International Journal of ePortfolio.

Dr. Barbara Comins, Professor of English, began her professional life as a cellist playing in the New Jersey Symphony, the New York Pops, the New York Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, and orchestras backing Tony Bennett, Benny Goodman, Henry Mancini, Barry Manilow, Luciano Pavarotti, Doc Severinsen, Frank Sinatra, Ben Vereen, and many others.
Winner of a National Endowment for the Humanities dissertation award, she earned her Ph.D. in English as a fellowship student at the CUNY Graduate Center. Her writing includes pieces in the New York Times, Poetry Calendar, Allegro, the Wallace Stevens Journal, and the Edith Wharton Review. Her essays “‘That Queer Sea’: Elizabeth Bishop and the Sea,” “‘Shuddering Insights’: Elizabeth Bishop and Surprise,” and “‘Then the Theatre…Changed’: Musical Frames for Wallace Stevens” appeared in the anthologies Divisions of the Heart: Elizabeth Bishop and the Art of Memory and Place, “In Worcester Massachusetts”: Essays on Elizabeth Bishop, and Essays on Transgressive Readings: Reading Over the Lines. With the British composer John Marson, she co-wrote the musical Getaway.
At LaGuardia Community College, she teaches freshman composition; creative writing; literature; the college’s capstone liberal arts seminar “Humanism, Science, and Technology,” and the course she created “Cultural Identity in American Literature.”
 

Carrie Conners was born in Moundsville, West Virginia. She received her BA in English Literature and English Writing from the University of Pittsburgh and her MA and PHD in Literary Studies with a minor in Creative Writing from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Her academic interests include contemporary American poetry, humor theory, politics in literature, and feminist theory. In addition to Composition and Basic Writing, Carrie Conners has taught Creative Writing, Introduction to Poetry, and the Learning Communities cluster, “Hedonism: The Vampire, the Deviant, the Repressed.” She is also a poet and her work has appeared in Tar Wolf Review, DMQ Review, California Quarterly, and RHINO.

Area of specialization: I have taught American, British, and world literature, journalism, and theater arts. My Masters thesis was part academic and part creative and centered on epistolary novels. A published writer, I have written articles for ELLE Magazine, New Jersey Countryside Magazine, the Vassar Quarterly, and The Asbury Park Press.
I have also worked in corporate sales for Xerox Corporation and AT&T and as a literary agent, a Rights Director at Dell Publishing Co., Inc. and a high school English teacher.

Lois Anne DeLong, an adjunct instructor at LaGuardia since 2007, has taught most of the basic composition courses offered by the Department of English, including ENG/ENA/ENZ 099, ENG/ENC 101, ENG102, and ENG103. The two basic threads that run through all of her classes is the interrelation between writing and critical thinking, and the idea that literature is best perceived in the context of its time. To achieve the latter, her classes often incorporate articles and research projects aimed at better understanding the social, economic, and political forces that created the world depicted in the text.
Prior to joining the LaGuardia faculty, Lois spent 25 years as a professional writer and editor in the nonprofit sector, handling a variety of assignments in technical publishing, public relations, and marketing. Most of those years were spent at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, where she served as managing editor of two quarterly magazines, publications marketing manager, and senior communications consultant. In 2004, she launched her own editorial freelance business, Better World Ink. She is a regular contributor to an engineering journal, Environmental Progress and Sustainable Development, writing about news and research trends affecting environmental engineers working in the chemical process and energy sectors. Other freelance clients have included ENACT, Inc., a nonprofit drama-in-education organization, and the Grand Street Settlement.
Theatre is another dominant influence on Lois’ life and teaching style. A founding member of the Presbytery of Long Island El Salvador Partnership, she serves as project director for the group’s Youth Theatre Workshop, an annual program that brings together young people from Long Island and El Salvador for a week of theatre exercises, improvisations, and the development and performance of an original bilingual play. Lois is also director of GSG (Godsongs Group) Productions, a youth and young adult theatre group based in Brentwood, NY, that produces original plays. To date, she has penned ten full-length plays for this group, and several shorter presentations for the Youth Theatre Workshop. In 2004, Pioneer Drama Services published one of her plays, a topical one-act called "Touchy Subjects" that deals with sexual harassment in schools. She is also co-author of No Manger too Small, a collection of short Christmas plays for children, published by CSS Publications in the fall of 2006.

Richard Dragan currently teaches Basic Writing, Composition I and II. In Spring 2007, he taught American Literature II, a survey of American Literature since 1865. Previous to LaGuardia, he taught a two-semester sequence on Great Works (with a World Literature focus) at Baruch College for several years. While in graduate school, he worked extensively in business and technical journalism publishing hundreds of articles for national magazines and websites. His work has been translated into 11 languages in print and online. Additionally, he has taught web design and computer technology at Columbia University’s School of Continuing Education for over a decade.
He is busy revising his dissertation on the use of recent science for aesthetic effects in the encyclopedic novels of James Joyce, Thomas Pynchon, Don DeLillo and Richard Powers. He is collaborating on a cognitive science cluster for 2009 that will bridge 'the two cultures' of science and the humanities. He is circulating a manuscript of short stories, Words for a Mood, and is working on a new novel.
An avid amateur classical and jazz guitarist, he continues to arrange music, especially jazz standards and the music of J. S. Bach.

Kristen Gallagher was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. She received her B.A. from University of Pennsylvania in 1991 with a major in Biological Basis of Behavior and worked with Dr. Ed Pugh researching color vision. After working in vision science at University of California-Davis for two years, Professor Gallagher realized she preferred to be a poet. She then returned to Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania College of General Studies where she studied Modern and Contemporary American Poetry with Alan Filreis, Bob Perelman, and Jean-Michel Rabaté. In 1995, she was a founding member of The Writers House at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2005, she received her Ph.D. in English Literature from the SUNY Buffalo Poetics Program. From 2000-2005, she was the editor of both Rust Talks, a Buffalo-area reading and discussion series and newsletter for poetry, and Handwritten Press (poetry chapbooks). She currently co-edits WIG Journal of the Arts with Tim Shaner, and Truck Books (poetry) with Christopher Alexander. Her first poetry book We Are Here came out in 2010. At LaGuardia, she serves as the Chair of the Creative Writing Committee, co-directs the Faculty Seminar “Teaching the City” with Dr. Karen Miller from Social Science, and leads the series “Collective Translation,” an ongoing project where students, faculty, and staff from the college work in collectives to translate modern American poems into as many languages as possible. Originally from Chile, Dr. Ximena Gallardo C. is a gender and film scholar who has published and presented widely on issues of representation in popular culture. She is currently working on a comprehensive study of women and gender in science fiction cinema entitled She Came from Outer Space. Dr. Gallardo is also Feminism editor for Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture, and the co-chair for the Science Fiction and Fantasy Area for the Southwest and Texas Popular Culture/American Culture Association. Her first book, Alien Woman (Continuum, 2004), a study of the representation of women and gender in the Alien film series, was co-authored with C. Jason Smith. Gail has been a full-time member of the English Department since 1986. In her early years at LaGuardia she was a full-time teacher and a full-time student. Thanks to an American Association of University Women Dissertation Fellowship, she was able to complete her Ph.D. in English at CUNY Graduate Center. She feels tremendous admiration for LaGuardia's "juggling" students.
Gail teaches a wide variety of courses at LaGuardia including Basic Writing, Composition I, Writing through Literature and The Novel in the college's Honors program. She has been a member of many LaGuardia Learning Community faculty teams. In 1998, LaGuardia's Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society, granted her honorary membership to acknowledge her excellence as a teacher. In 2003 she was named a Semi-Finalist for the David R. Pierce Faculty Technology Award from the American Association of Community Colleges.
With Bret Eynon, she launched In Transit: The LaGuardia Journal on Teaching and Learning. The first issue was published in Fall 2005. She continues to serve as Editor of the college's journal.

Stafford Grégoire earned his Baccalaureate at Hunter College (1992) and his Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley (May 2004). His specialization is in Nineteenth Century African American and American Literature. He is revising his dissertation, Blacks Seeing Seeing Blacks: Surveillance and The Gaze in the Works of Frederick Douglass, Harriet Jacobs, and William Wells Brown for publication. This work explores the nexus between Foucault’s theory of surveillance and Lacan’s refinement of the theories of the Gaze. He is interested in the depiction of the visual forces of the “look,” “the gaze,” or surveillance, which reify the status of African Americans as diminished beings. Currently he is an Assistant Professor at LaGuardia Community College CUNY and working on a newer, though still related field, Hip-Hop Fiction or contemporary African American crime novels. He has recently presented two papers on the subject in New Mexico and The Bronx. “Hip-Hop Scribes: Uncomfortable Truths in Black on White” examined the creation of a new genre of African American or Black Literature outside of the confines of mainstream publishing. “Hip-Hop Scribes: Double-Consciousness Double-Crossed” examines how this new genre is, because of its unique genesis, able to transgress the DuBoisian paradigm of “self-consciousness” in African American Belle Lettres.
