Faculty members in our department are very involved in professional development. Following is a list of sites and organizations that are related to the profession of college reading instruction, language teaching and educational research.

American Educational Research Association (AERA)

The Organization:

The American Educational Research Association (AERA), is concerned with improving the educational process by encouraging scholarly inquiry related to education and by promoting the dissemination and practical application of research results.

College Reading Association (CRA)

The Organization:

Promotes standards and competency within the profession.

Stimulates the self-development and professional growth of teachers and reading specialists at all educational levels.

Encourages the continuing improvement of college and university curricula and encourages preparation programs for teachers and reading specialists.

Encourages the continuing improvement of administrative, clinical, diagnostic, and instructional practices related to the learning process.

Acts as a resource for the consideration and dissemination of information related to the field of literacy.

Prepares and distributes professional publication.

Sponsors conferences and meetings to meet the professional needs of its members.

College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA)

The Organization:

CRLA (formerly WCRLA) is a group of student-oriented professionals active in the fields of reading, learning assistance, developmental education, and tutorial services at the college/adult level

Community College Humanities Association

The Organization:

The Community College Humanities Association is a national organization that serves to strengthen the humanities in the nation's community colleges.

International Reading Association (IRA)

The Organization:

IRA was founded in 1956 as a professional organization for those involved in teaching reading to learners of all ages. The members are dedicated to promoting high levels of literacy for all by:

  • Improving the quality of reading instruction
  • Disseminating research and information about reading
  • Encouraging the lifetime reading habit

National Association of Developmental Educators (NADE)

The Organization:

NADE seeks to improve the theory and practice of developmental education in postsecondary education, the professional capabilities of developmental educators, and the design of programs to prepare developmental educators. The organization is a nonprofit, nonpartisan education association composed of nearly 3,000 from across the U.S. and a growing number of international members.

New York College Learning Skills Association (NYCLSA)

The Organization:

NYCLSA serves developmental educators in New York.
