The Cooperative Education Department believes in the value of experience-based learning. Internships are required because of the importance they provide students at all levels. Internships are designed for:
- Students who have no experience, but want to enter the work world
- Students who are working now, but are seeking a better position
- Students who have no experience in their chosen career field. (– highlights the connection of coursework to careers)
- Students who enjoy their work, and are seeking to enhance their opportunities
- Students who have extensive work experience, but want to strike out in a new direction
Requirements
What are the requirements for participation in Co-op?

You must have:
- Completed 24 credits of coursework
- Completed Fundamentals of Professional Advancement (CEP 121)
- Completed all Basic Skills courses
- Completed introductory or other pre-requisite courses in your major
- A GPA of 2.0 or higher for internship
How many hours are required for the internship?

- You will be required to work at least 25 to 40 hours a week for the full-time internship or 15 to 20 hours a week for the part-time internship.
How are Co-op interns graded?

Grading is based on:
- The evaluation from the internship employer
- Passing the seminar course
- Achievement of learning objectives

- Attending a Final Evaluation Conference
What is the Final Evaluation Conference?

- This is a meeting between the intern and the Co-op Faculty Advisor in which the intern’s performance (employer evaluation is reviewed) and learning objectives are assessed, essay is submitted, and grade is given.

- Yes, you may develop your own internship but you must receive permission from your Co-op Faculty Advisor.

What courses are needed for Co-op to satisfy graduation requirements?

- Refer to the college catalog for specific Co-op requirements in your major.
The typical sequence for day students is:
- CEP 121: Fundamentals of Professional Advancement (pre-requisite taken before internship – three credits)
- CEP 201: Full-time internship (three credits)
- CPA 041 or CPB041 or CPC041: Internship Seminar (taken concurrently with CEP 201)
Extended day students:
- CEP 121: Fundamentals of Professional Advancement (pre-requisite taken before internship – three credits)
- Extended day students may take CEP 201: Full-time Internship & Seminar or CEP 151: Part-time Internship & Seminar as an unrestricted elective course
What is the Fundamentals of Professional Advancement course?

- Fundamentals of Professional Advancement (CEP 121) is a 3 credit course that is required to begin the Co-op internship process. The course help students prepare for the internship experience, complete self-assessments, research careers, develop resume and interview skills, and provides general information about the Co-op program.
What is the Internship Seminar?

- The Internship Seminar is a 6-session course designed to help you integrate concepts with real-life situations. The internship and seminar are taken concurrently and both must be completed in order to receive a final grade. In the Seminar, you will gain greater knowledge on career decision-making, planning for professional mobility and lifelong learning. If you do not complete the seminar, your internship final grade will be an incomplete.

Are internships paid?

- Internships are either paid, stipend, or volunteer.
What is a stipend?

- A stipend is a fixed amount of money given by the internship employer. A stipend may also be provided in the form of a Metrocard.

International Students

- International students may register for Co-op Internships, but must get approval from the International Student Office for any special restrictions that may apply to you.
Extended Day Students

- Internships are not required for Extended Day students, however they may register for internships as electives. Certain specialized majors may require internships. Check the college catalog for specific program requirements.

Do all majors need to do an internship?

- In general, all day-admitted students must complete at least one internship in order to graduate. However, you need to check your Degree Works or the College catalog for the specific requirements in your major.
Are internship credits transferable if I change my major?

- Internship credits are transferable to many senior colleges. The program and college to which you apply determine how the credits are applied. Check the college catalog for specific program requirements.
Internship Process
When should I take the internship?

- Fundamentals of Professional Advancement should be completed during your second semester. In the semester you are scheduled to earn 24 credits you should make an advisement appointment with your Co-op Faculty Advisor at least six weeks before the end of the term to discuss the best semester for you to take your internship. Together you may decide to complete an internship right away or wait until you complete additional major courses.
How do I register for the internship?

- Unlike other courses where you register online, you must secure a Permit to Register from your Co-op Faculty Advisor. Once you have secured an internship, he/she will give you a Permit to Register. You take the permit to register to the Co-op Central Office, M204. The permit will indicate your correct internship and seminar section. Check your registration online to see that you are registered for an internship and seminar.
Can I take other courses during an internship?

- You are permitted to take additional coursework while on internship, as long as it does not conflict with your internship and seminar. It is strongly recommended you take no more than six credits of additional coursework while taking a full-time internship.
