» Roles & Responsibilities
Supervisors play a vital role in the cultivation and development of the interns’ skills, attitudes and self-confidence. The success of this partnership depends greatly upon the effective and supportive working relationship between supervisors and students. The following guidelines were developed to assist you in the process and ensure a successful cooperative education experience.
Orientation
On the first day of the internship, it is important to explain the organization’s function, policies and procedures. Supervisors should also provide a clear description of the intern’s job responsibilities.
Supervision and Guidance
By providing appropriate supervision and guidance, your role in the development of the intern’s professional growth and outlook is significant. The intern is expected to perform at the same standards of your regular employees and adhere to rules and regulations regarding work hours and holidays.
Feedback and Evaluation
Your feedback is essential for student learning and success. We encourage you to provide informal feedback throughout the entire internship. At the end of the internship period, you are required to complete a simple Employer Evaluation Form, which is an important component of the student’s grade. We recommend you share this evaluation with the intern prior to returning it to the Cooperative Education Department. The intern is also required to write an evaluation about their learning experience at the end of the internship period.
If you experience any challenges with the intern’s performance or have any questions/concerns, please contact the Co-op Faculty Advisor managing your internship site.
