Learn the different parts of a computer and how to use Windows and the Internet. At the end of the course, you will be able to handle a mouse, easily move around using Windows and zip through Web pages on the Internet. (You can register for Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access at the same time that you register for this course.) Students should come to class with a floppy disk. Recommended Co-requisite: Introduction to Keyboarding

Introduction to Keyboarding on the Computer

Extensive practice will help you develop speed and accuracy in touch keyboarding on the computer. You will also learn the 3-finger key-padding method, and some very basic word processing techniques. Target speed: Minimum of 30 gross words per minute with a maximum of three errors. College open labs will be available to students. Students should come with a floppy disk.

Advanced Keyboarding on the Computer

This course will enable you to greatly improve your current speed and accuracy on the computer through extensive practice in speed building and error-reduction exercises. Practice will involve typical correspondence and job search letters; take home assignments will be provided. College open labs will be available to students. Students should come to class with a floppy disk. Prerequisite: Introduction to Keyboarding or a good knowledge of the keyboard.

Course: Computer Networking for Non-Technicians

This course is for those people who work on a computer attached to a network and do not have a clue what that really means. You will be introduced to the basic concepts and terminology of networks in a user-friendly way, learning the parts of a network, why we use networks and the different kinds of networks that exist. This knowledge will be of use to you at work as well as at home, where you will benefit from knowing how a home network can be set up to share common resources such as printers, scanners and Internet access.

Having an Internet connection without protecting it is like taking a vacation and leaving your door wide open! Take control of your net and learn how to detect and eradicate spyware and worms, install anti-virus software and create a personal firewall hands-on. You do not need to be technically inclined to take this course. Prerequisite: You should have access to computers at home and/or in an office environment.

Unleash the full power or QuickBooks and gain a greater understanding of the nature of accounting at the same time. You'll work on bank reconciliations, sales taxes, depreciation, sales returns, 1099 Forms, inventory adjustments and jobs costing. Prerequisite: QuickBooks Pro, LaGuardia Certificate in Computerized Bookkeeping or equivalent experience.
