LaGuardia Community College's Adult and Continuing Education Program offers a unique and comprehensive Certificate Program in Importing and Exporting. It is intended for those who want more specific information about all aspects of the field and consists of 6 courses. . In addition, there is a one session seminar that gives an overview of the field, including how to start an import/export business. (It is not part of the Certificate Program.) Students may take individual courses without intending to earn a Certificate.

Import/Export Basics

An introduction to the steps involved in starting an import or export operation from scratch. This course is designed for the “absolute beginner”. Focus is on import requirements; export requirements; legal considerations; general business requirements and personal goals. This seminar is not part of the Certificate Program.

An in-depth exploration of the range of activities involved in importing products, the role of Customs, handling paperwork, product selection and marketing, pricing, strategies, sources of help.

An introduction to the activies involved in customhouse brokerage and foreign freight forwarding. We will discuss the uses of various carriers and licensing and documentation requirements of the U.S. Government.

This seminar takes a detailed look at the financial instruments used in import and export transactions. You will explore various methods and analyze the risks involved. You will also get some tips on cultivating an effective working relationship with your bank.

Provides an in-depth discussion of the range of activities involved in exporting to other countries: the role of the International Trade Administration, documentation, restrictions, overseas marketing, export pricing, and the availability of federal and state assistance.

A comprehensive introduction to the exciting world of international trade. Topics include globalization, world trade institutions and agreements (such as WTO, NAFTA, CARICOM, Andean Community, etc.) and the nature of international business. Also covered are New York City’s import/export facilities and the benefits and challenges for the beginning importer and exporter.

An easy to follow, hands-on approach that will enable you to practice and become competent in preparing a variety of import and export documentation. The fee includes current forms which will be worked on in class. An essential course for potential entrepreneurs, as well as those who work or plan to work in the field.
