The term “body” encompasses a variety of meanings. For instance, “the physical structure and material substance of an animal, plant, or building.” Or, “a group, together, collectively.” Generally speaking, a body is the largest or main part of anything, including a group of people (e.g., a majority or an entity), a text (written, cinematic, orchestral, etc.), or an epistemology. As such, the term can be used to address a number of issues and interests relevant to society and its members. The theme for this year’s LaGuardia Speech Contest, therefore, is Body of/and Knowledge, allowing for a variety of topics and approaches to issues of concern to our students.
Opening Reception for the Chile Exhibition at the Queens Museum of Art has been confirmed for Thursday, May 9, 2013, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.The exhibition opens on May 2nd and will run through May 26th.

Spring is here (sort of) which means that Philosophy is in the air in the form of the 3rd Annual CUNY Undergraduate Philosophy Conference which will once again be sponsored by the LaGuardia Philosophy program. The keynote speaker of the conference, Dr. Jaysankar Lal Shaw, has come all the way from New Zealand to participate in the conference, and the title of his talk is "Distinctive Features of Indian Philosophy." In addition, we have a number of student presentations on such topics as: * "Emptiness in Art: The Deceptively Hidden Nature of Lichtenstein's 'Kitsch'" * Film and Philosophy panel * Freedom determined but still evolving * Causal Theory of Reference * The Determinist Paradox) As a special bonus, Dr. Shaw is conducting a seminar on Thursday afternoon, April 18, in room E242 from 3:30 - 5:00. The title of this workshop is "Human Beings and Freedom: East and West" and it promises to be a provocative and fascinating session. You are warmly welcomed to attend.
WHAT: A Photography Exhibition titled “The Astoria Project”WHEN: Thursday, April 11, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The Max Planck Institute of Religious and Ethnic Diversity, an international research organization, was doing a project on the cultural diversity of Astoria and needed professional photographs taken of the people and places of the Queens neighborhood. So they turned to LaGuardia Community College and the students in its commercial photography program.The results: 50 stunning black and white and color images that will be on exhibit beginning April 11. We invite you to the opening reception to view the works of our talented students who masterfully captured the rich cultural diversity of this neighborhood. If you cannot make the reception, the exhibition runs through the end of June.

Listen to their experience of the festival, the successes of moving on to semi-finals for the Irene Ryan Acting Competition, the excitement of the interview process for the Design and Technical Management Award and the Musical Theatre Initiative Competition. Our students did remarkably well and beat students from 4-year colleges such as Boston University, Boston College, University of Massachusetts, SUNY New Paltz, and even Graduate Students!!!
