In May 2011, Alpha Theta Phi, LaGuardia Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society For the Two-Year College, was the only New York chapter awarded a Distinguished Chapter award at PTK’s International Convention held in Seattle. Since 2007, members and the chapter have dared to do more in their on and off campus chapter activities and service learning projects, for which they have won numerous regional and international awards.

This year, the chapter was ranked 13th among 1,250 chapters worldwide. It also acquired a Distinguished College Project award, and the chapter’s President, Kevin Magana, went home with a Distinguished Chapter Officer award.

CUNY Works – Help Us Help Our Communities

CUNY Works is the City University of New York’s initiative to actively work in our communities to provide help and support to individuals and small businesses adversely effected by the storm. Now, with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy still being felt and as a participant in CUNY Works, LaGuardia Community College is reaching out for volunteers to help our community recover.

Hurricane Sandy Emergency Relief Annual Leave Bank Program

Hurricane Sandy had a catastrophic impact upon many CUNY employees. It is recognized that there may be employees who need to take leave in order to attend to emergent conditions, but that they may not have sufficient annual leave to do so.

The University will create a temporary program, limited to dealing with the effects of Hurricane Sandy, known as The City University of New York Hurricane Sandy Emergency Relief Annual Leave Bank Program (the “Bank”). Under this program, each college creates a pool of annual leave, voluntarily donated by individuals at the campus, who are employed full-time on an annual salary basis for use as annual leave by eligible full-time or part-time/hourly employees.

Eligible recipients may receive up to five days (5) days of paid annual leave for use during the period from the November 1, 2012 until February 28, 2013. The Bank will be administered by each college’s Office of Human Resources, including the Central Office.

For more information and to receive or donate annual leave, please refer to the application and guidelines:
